Pre-release notice
The OpenEFA-CN public release is imminent
The community edition of the OpenEFA email security gateway is in final testing and will be published on GitHub under the AGPL in the coming weeks. This page is the project's new home. Here is what is coming and what to do in the meantime.
What is being released
- OpenEFA-CN, a complete Postfix-based mail gateway with 58 detection modules covering authentication and alignment, phishing and impersonation, business email compromise, attachments and links, backscatter, and quarantine with daily digests.
- A public repository with a clean history, every file under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later, with the license, trademark and security policies alongside the code.
- An unattended installer for a fresh Ubuntu 24.04 server, with an answers file for repeatable builds. It has passed end-to-end testing on a clean machine, which is the gate we set for publishing.
- Membership in the EFA Collective, the threat-sharing network every OpenEFA node feeds and draws from. Free for community nodes, on the condition that the node contributes back. What a node sends is documented field by field.
What is left before the release
The code is done and tested. What remains is the paperwork that a public project needs to be right on day one: the contributor terms, the third-party notices, the changelog, and the repository itself. We would rather publish a week later than publish without them. The release date will be announced here and on the forum, not before.
If you run the 2025 release
Keep running it. The community edition renamed its service user, configuration directory, database and services, so moving a 2025 node onto it needs a migration script, which ships after the release. Do not reinstall over a working node. The 2025 code was and remains GPL; nothing about the new release changes that.
The forum
The OpenEFA forum reopens on release day at openefa.org/forum, with the same board and the same threads as before. Existing accounts keep working. Until then, this page and the release post are the two places to watch.
